Last weekend was great at the Lake Independence/Big Bay Ice Fishing Derby. The lake is still producing some nice catches of perch and walleye. Chad Dilts of downstate Frankfort won the walleye class with a 24" 5lb. beauty. winning perch was 14 inches and northern winner was 31 inches. Ice is a good 18 inches now with lots of snow cover. No much going on here since the weather turned so cold. Had a nice catch of perch and a couple of walleye on the 31st of January but haven't been out since. Hopefully we'll get a little warm up in the week ahead. One good thing is lots of good ice is being made and we should have a good late season even in March for the jumbo's. Late February and early March is the best time of the ice fishing season up here so if you can make some plans for then. This coming weekend (Feb 10 and 11) is the Lake Independence Ice Fishing Derby. Hope we see you there.

Lake Independence again. The reports are just getting better. Just got a call from our Ice Fishing Guide Shane Marheine. Started at noon. 10 large Perch so far. One nearly 17 inches. All over 10-12 inches with the average around 14 inches. Minnows on small jigs about 30 feet of water at the perch hole just off of Perkins park. A couple of Guys from the Detroit area are having a blast. Will move inshore as evening comes for Walleye.

Still getting some nice Perch at the Perch hole just off of Perkins Park. Big Pike also being caught on smelt and suckers. Evening walleye fishing doing well but not as great as before. The neat thing on Lake Independence this winter is catching the Lake trout the DNR planted in the fall. These are cold water fish and are really putting up a nice fight.several Pike in the 10-15 lb range have been caught. While up here make sure you talk to Bill at the Big Bay Outfitters. Perch Fishing at lake Independence has really been great. Had 2 guys out from Indiana on Friday and caught a nice mess of about 18 --12-13 inches. Using fathead minnows right off the bottom in about 20 feet of water. Just look for all the ice houses in the center of the lake. Sunday the 14th caught a few more nice perch but mainly was fishing for Pike. Little slow today although had a family with kids out and they really had a great time. Monday the 16th 3 fellows from Indiana again reported about 10 nice perch. Ice is about 12 inches now. Lake Independence again. Ice really getting good as we have had several nights of almost single digit temps.  Slammin the Perch!!!! Over 40 today 11.5-12.5 inches one was 14 inches. Caught on flat head minnows. Also a big Northern 38".

Lake Independence at Big Bay. Group of 3 from Ohio reported catches several nice Perch about 12-13 inces in the deep hole in the center of the lake. Ice 7-8 inches. Also saw a 36" Lake trout taken from the same area.

Lake Independence. 6 walleye and several northerns on tip-ups. Beautiful day to be on the ice. 6-7 inches. Some quads now running on Independence. Walleyes came late after sundown. Little Bay de Noc- Lots of open water. Not even good around the shore anymore. They actually put the docks back in at the boat ramp and they are open water fishing again. Several Ice houses afloat and going down. next week is looking much better as the average temps should decrease by up to 15 degrees.

Still having warmer weather up here but very little ice is melting.  Highs in the 30's and lows in the 20's. Still 6-9 inches on small lakes. Nice lake trout catch going on in Lake Independence per Bill at Big Bay Outfitters. These are stocked fish from the DNR last fall. Looking forward to the colder weather thats supposed to set in over the weekend. Fishing on Independence tomorrow and will have a report for that. At least we are ice fishing up here as their is little or no ice south of here. Little Bay de Noc still has lots of open water in the middle.

Fishing on Juncob Lake today. Rainy day but great fishing. Nice mess of Crappies, Blue Gill, Northerns and Perch. Ice about 10 inches. 2 groups out today from Corpus Christi, TX and Springfield, MO. Having a great time in the frozen north.
Crappies and Perch on flathead minnows, bluegills on wax worms and the pike were caught with suckers on a tip-up.

Spent today fishing for Crappies on Switzers Basin just south of Palmer. Ice was about 6-7 inches and hard. Caught a pail full of medium sized crappies jigging fathead minnows. Going back tomorrow for some of the huge Northern's that we know are there.

Marquette County is good ice now. But be careful out there.
Fishing Independence at this time 10:00 Am. just got a report from the crew of a couple 20" walleyes so far.Ended the day with several nice northerns. One was 34" and 3 walleyes.Ice about 5 inches. Saw some guy go across in 4 wheeler. ice seemed ok.

Fished Little Shag lake and Harlow Lake today. good Bite of Gills on Shag and N ortherns on Harlow. Nothing of any real size though. 5" ice on both lakes

5 inches of ice on most smaller inland lakes. Will be fishing tomorrow and will have a report then.
